Why cellular connectivity remains SA retail’s overlooked advantage

South African retailers have spent years digitising the in-store experience, linking physical and digital touchpoints to build a more integrated customer journey. Yet one element is consistently overlooked: the cellular connectivity that underpins it. South Africa’s power supply has stabilised considerably, with Eskom reporting over 300 consecutive days without load shedding, but localised load reduction and ageing infrastructure still put pressure on specific areas. A strong in-store cell signal has moved from nice-to-have to business imperative.

Fortunately, the country has a solid cellular foundation to build on. GSMA Intelligence data shows that 98.7% of South Africa’s mobile connections now run on 3G, 4G or 5G broadband networks. Even so, the default in many stores remains a free Wi-Fi hotspot, when a shift towards cellular is what actually protects the customer experience.

Consider a customer partway through an in-store purchase, or using the retailer’s app to check product information. That interaction needs to be seamless and uninterrupted. Cellular connections are inherently more reliable than Wi-Fi, with far fewer signal drop-outs, which keeps both customers and staff from getting frustrated. Not every store has a generator, and even where one exists, the switchover is rarely seamless when power dips.

There are security considerations too. As data privacy becomes a bigger concern for consumers, cellular networks offer a safer platform than public Wi-Fi. Cybersecurity providers routinely warn against using public hotspots for banking or any transaction involving sensitive information. Customers and businesses alike want assurance that their data isn’t exposed to malicious actors, and cellular connectivity’s stronger encryption and protocols deliver that.

Delivering the satisfaction needed Most people have tried to connect to a store’s Wi-Fi only to be asked for personal details or to accept terms and conditions nobody reads. Cellular connectivity, by contrast, is automatic. There’s no login required, and the experience is consistent across every store location.

Managing and troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks also strains a retailer’s IT resources. Cellular solutions remove this burden. Nextivity’s IntelliBoost technology, for instance, lets retailers focus on their core business rather than wrestling with technical issues or the quality of in-store cellular coverage. Nextivity solutions deliver strong, reliable signal wherever it’s needed.

Going smart with connectivity As smart retail solutions grow, reliable cellular connectivity extends well beyond calls and messages. Mobile apps, payment systems, kiosk connectivity and inventory management tools all depend on uninterrupted data access. Always-on in-store cellular coverage translates directly into a better customer experience, and from there, into stronger business operations and customer loyalty.

South Africa now has 51.7 million internet users, representing 79.6% of the population, and the great majority access the internet primarily through mobile devices. People increasingly use their phones for everything from reading product reviews and redeeming coupons to accessing loyalty programme discounts. As the number of connected devices and apps keeps growing, so does the demand for cellular coverage that can handle the traffic without missing a beat.

Maintaining access Looking ahead, South African retailers can’t afford to treat cellular connectivity as an afterthought. Even with the recent improvement in grid stability, localised outages and infrastructure strain remain a reality in parts of the country, and the next generation of consumers will expect instant, secure and uninterrupted connectivity regardless. Retailers that invest in robust cellular solutions now will be better placed to meet that expectation.

As the line between physical and digital retail continues to blur, cellular connectivity is the bridge that keeps the transition seamless for customers and businesses alike. Get it right, and retailers don’t just maintain service, they improve the entire in-store experience.
